A little preparation helps define the job and protects the belongings you want to keep. Agree the scope and collection details before moving heavy items.
Make a keep-and-remove list
Set aside documents, valuables, keys, photographs and personal belongings. If you are clearing someone else’s property, make sure you have authority to instruct the work and agree what stays.
Photograph the complete job
Stand back to capture the full pile or room. Add pictures of large furniture and any hidden waste behind it. For a garden or building job, show timber, green waste, soil, rubble and plasterboard separately.
Explain the route out
Share your floor level and any lift restrictions, tight corners, side gates or steps. Where building management controls loading, check the rules and provide the permitted collection window.
Flag unusual materials
Tell us about appliances, sharp materials, chemicals, gas bottles and anything you cannot identify. Do not disturb suspected asbestos or put it in an ordinary waste pile. Specialist materials need separate discussion before a general collection is agreed.
On collection day
Have the agreed contact available and keep the route clear. Keep children and pets away from the loading area. Do not obstruct a pavement, shared hallway or emergency exit with waste, and do not attempt unsafe lifting to prepare for the team.
